How do I convert an EXR file to PPM step by step?

Upload your .exr file using the upload area. Select PPM as the target format. Choose bit depth (8-bit or 16-bit) and click 'Convert'. Once processed, download the resulting .ppm file. Note: any layers in the EXR will be merged into a single PPM image.

Why would I need to convert EXR to PPM?

EXR (OpenEXR) is an HDR format used in film and VFX, storing floating-point pixel data and multiple layers. PPM is a simple uncompressed RGB format supported by many legacy and script-based image tools. Converting to PPM makes the image viewable in X11, ImageMagick, and custom pipelines that lack OpenEXR support. However, remember that PPM is uncompressed, so file sizes can be much larger than a compressed EXR and you lose HDR range if you convert to 8-bit.

What happens to EXR layers, transparency, and color profiles during conversion to PPM?

When converting from EXR to PPM, all image layers are flattened into a single RGB image. Alpha/transparency is not supported by PPM, so it is discarded. Resolution and DPI metadata are carried over, but color profiles (like ACES) are not embedded in PPM. If your EXR uses 32-bit float pixels, the converter down-samples them to the selected bit depth (8-bit or 16-bit), which may cause a loss of dynamic range. For 16-bit PPM, the integer values preserve relative color information but not the original HDR exposure.
